Kayaking Instruction
Basic kayaking: how to get in & out of the boat, how to hold your paddle, how to stroke, how to turn the boat. Groups ok.
Naturalist tours: Small groups, tour around the area, look at the plants, birds, etc.
Experience: I've been in and out of canoes and rowboats for more than 30 years. I've had a kayak since 2003. I guided groups of up to 10 kayakers on the lower Farmington River in 2005 to 2007. I have raced on the Scantic River in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Kayaks fall into several basic categories. Recreational kayaks are wide, not very tippy, and great for flatwater or learning. Race kayaks are longer, narrow, tippy, much faster, and have little to no room to bring gear. Sea kayaks are longer, narrow, tippy, and have a lot of space for gear too. Whitewater kayaks are short, wide, designed for spinning, very tippy and not a lot of fun in flatwater. But you gotta learn to handle them in flatwater.
The State of CT requires one PFD per person. I require that they be worn.
If you would like me to come and talk to your Garden Club, Plant Society, or other Organization, please contact me!
I am available for talks with slides or Power Point presentation, and also to guide Hikes or Quiet-Water Kayaking.
